My Life in Dog Years Chapter 6 Summary

Caesar: The Giant

  • Paulsen is older now, working construction and living in a small cottage with his wife and child in Colorado.
  • One day he comes across an ad in the paper. Someone who's moving is looking to find a home Caesar, a Great Dane.
  • Paulsen responds to the ad even though he realizes that a huge dog in a small cottage is probably a bad idea.
  • Part of the reason he responds is because he's partial to Great Danes as a breed.
  • Paulsen confesses that he often rescues animals. He can't leave the pound without a new pet (or five).
  • Here's Caesar. Imagine a huge dog: Caesar is like five times the size of that.
  • Caesar's old owner drops him off at Paulsen's cottage. Caesar is devastated when he leaves.
  • This dog is seriously heartbroken. He just sits in front of the door and stares at it, waiting for his owner's return. Also, he's on hunger strike.
  • After six days of this, Caesar finally comes around. He wakes up Paulsen and demands to be fed. He eats nearly everything in the kitchen.
  • Time to go outside. Paulsen lives in the wilderness, so he's wearing only sandals and boxer shorts. He wraps the leash around his wrist.
  • As soon as Paulsen opens the door, everything goes crazy. Caesar sees Arnie the cat and freaks out.
  • Arnie runs. Caesar gives chase. Paulsen immediately loses one of his shoes. This is not going to end well.
  • Caesar drags Paulsen all over creation—through a neighbor's yard, a bike rental shop, and a small cafe.
  • Paulsen has somehow become stuck in the doorway of the cafe. A woman who works at the cafe approaches. She notices that Paulsen is wearing only underwear and one shoe. She's not impressed and kicks him out.
  • Paulsen moves on to another memory: a Halloween where a trick-or-treater dressed as a werewolf growled at Caesar. Scared, the ginormous dog, retreated to the closet. He stayed there every Halloween.
  • He remembers a game they liked to play called "get the kitty." Basically Paulsen pretended to chase an imaginary cat, and Caesar went bananas.
  • One morning, during a particularly rowdy game of get the kitty, someone tried to deliver a package. Caesar jumped all over the deliveryman and scared him, badly.
  • Paulsen clarifies that Caesar wasn't an angry or violent dog. He just liked to chase cats. Also he loved hot dogs, and would snap at them like an alligator.
  • One day, at a family picnic/baseball game, Paulsen was catching up with a friend. Suddenly, he sees Caesar off in the distance. A little girl is about to give him a hot dog.
  • Paulsen is very afraid that Caesar will snap like an alligator, like he usually does.
  • To Paulsen's surprise, the dog is very gentle with the little girl.
  • Now all the kids are feeding Caesar hot dogs. Everyone loves him. When the game starts, Caesar helps work the outfield.
  • As Paulsen's leaving, a little girl gives him a picture she colored. It features a huge dog and is captioned "WE LOVE YOU SEEZER." How cute is that?
  • Paulsen says Caesar died a long time ago. He still has the picture, and when he sees it, he remembers the dog fondly.
