Here, we have Jack talking to his father, whose voice is coming out of the radio before Jack smashes it. It shows how desperately Jack is trying to overcome his troubled past. Sadly, Jack's father is in him, and by the end of the novel Jack becomes a version of him. When the Overlook possesses him, he forgets his own words and speaks only in his father's words.

"Run away. Quick. And remember how much I love you." (55.60)

Jack's last words to Danny will leave the child with a little sweetness to temper all the pain.

"No," Danny said. He took one of his father's bloody hands and kissed it. "It's almost over." (55.63)
