The Prince and the Pauper Chapter 18 Summary

The Prince with the Tramps

  • The next day, Edward and the vagabonds head out. On their way, they pass some towns and do what vagabonds do: they steal some stuff and terrorize the neighborhood.
  • After a while, the vagabonds decide to start begging and try to make Edward beg, too. As you can guess, it doesn't work out well: Edward spoils their plot by totally tattling on them.
  • Lucky for him, the vagabonds run from the scene of the crime, and he gets to run in the opposite direction to freedom.
  • By nighttime, Edward has wandered into a barn. He falls asleep there under some horse blankets, but just as he's getting cozy, he feels something touch him.
  • What could it be? Edward is pretty freaked out, but he eventually realizes that it was just a sleeping calf. Thank goodness. The calf is less frightening than John Hobbs—and warmer to snuggle with, too.
