Roman History. What with everyone obsessing over the fall of the Roman Empire, a lot of people forget that it had a rise, too. It's like bread in that way. The Empire lasted for a couple centuries, and before that, there was a monarchy and a republic, all the way back to when either a wolf or the guy from that one poem founded the place. Look, it was a long time ago. This is going to put the classics into context for you.
Homer. Who doesn't love Homer, with his yellow skin caused by severe liver failure, his brain damage caused by years of untreated head wounds, or his love of donuts contributing to both his obesity and potential diabetes? Homer is just the best. Would we even have comedy without him? What does Homer have to do with civilization?
Different Homer.Yeah, we didn't want you to be surprised when you showed up the first day of class covered in Simpsons paraphernalia. This Homer wrote epic poems that were the most metal thing ever before metal was even a thing. That's right, stories about the baddest warriors of Ancient Greece going around and being awesome, mostly by stabbing monsters with spears. His stories are the basis for a lot of fiction today.
Plato. The dude invented thinking. That's only barely a joke. Little fun fact for you: Plato is actually a nickname meaning "broad." A lot of people will say this was his referring to his mind, but since it was conferred by his wrestling coach, it really sounds more like someone calling him fat. You're also going to get classes on all the big shots of Greek philosophy, including Socrates and Aristotle.
Art. Includes both the Greek and Roman varieties. Considering that Ancient Greece and Rome are still regarded as paragons of awesomeness in the art world, this shouldn't be a surprise. They had so many cool myths and monsters to paint, and they loved sculpting naked guys playing sports.
The Greco-Roman World. This has nothing to do with wrestling. Well, it has nothing directly to do with wrestling. See, the Greeks and the Romans really liked wrestling, and forgive us if this is getting old, but it's still around. Sort of. That's a running theme with classical studies. Anyway, this class places the civilizations in context, telling you what else was going on in the world. No man is an island, and neither are civilizations. There were other city-states, empires, nomadic tribes, villages, autonomous farming collectives, you name it, and a lot of them had contact with the classical world.
