Common Core Standards

Grade 2

Reading RF.2.3.C

Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.

Second graders got started on this substandard back in first grade, but this year, it's kicked up a notch. When second graders are breaking down two-syllable words, they should know if they have two long vowels on their hands or if there's a short vowel and a long vowel. On top of that, they can use their newfound vowel team knowledge to do some further decoding, too.
