Common Core Standards

Grade 4

Reading RL.4.7

Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.

As students move away from texts with illustrations in them, they should be scrutinizing each non-text thing they come across more and more. Visuals at this point may be more interpretations of a section of text instead of a literal illustration, and this standard asks students to think about why illustrators may have interpreted a scene a certain way over another. By identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions, students can see how a text's non-text counterpart is slightly different from the text.
