Just Moved to Alaska?
Q: So, you just moved to Alaska from Washington. You had a license there. Can you drive?
(Expect a lot of trivia questions like this on your test.)
A: Well, yes, at first. You're allowed to drive in Alaska with a license from another state for up to 90 days. It's important to note, though, that if you're moving to Alaska, you only have ten days from the time you become a resident to apply for Alaska registration on your vehicle.
How do they define "resident," though? Well, if you
- are registered to vote (doesn't affect minors),
- just started a new in-state job (also likely doesn't affect minors),
- pay homeowners taxes (also, doesn't really affect minors),
- enroll your children in a public school (you're really striking out here, kid),
- or you get some other privilege that you wouldn't normally get if you lived out of state
...then you're a resident.
