If for some reason you are leaving California for up to one year—wait, what? Why are you leaving? Where are you going? We were just starting to get along, and pay taxes together!

But supposing you have a good reason, you can request a free one-year extension as long as you do so before your license expires. You’d have to mail in your request, including your name, DL number (that’s your Driver license number, or ‘Dumb Luck’ number, depending on how barely you squeaked by on your driving test), birth date, CA address, and out-of-state-address.

But seriously, we think you should stay put. It’s warm here, and smog makes for awesome sunsets.
