What was Big Willy Shakes going for?
Antonio is really hurt by Sebastian. He saved Sebastian's life. And it wasn't exactly a piece of cake. He pulled him from the "jaws of death." Sounds tough to Shmoop.
Not only did he save his life, but he offered his devotion. When they got to shore, Antonio helped Sebastian out and gave him some money. And how does Sebastian repay him? By claiming he's never even seen the guy? Ugh. Can you believe the nerve of that guy?
Actually, we can.
See, Antonio helps add to the twisted identity crisis happening in the play. He might think he sees Sebastian, but he's actually seeing his twin sis, Viola, who is dressed as a boy Cesario. It's all very confusing and pretty darn hilarious for the audience.
It's just not that funny for poor Antonio, who actually thinks he's been betrayed by his bestie. Ouch. It gets worse. Critics argue about whether or not Antonio is a close friend to Sebastian or a lover (it's possible that he's both). There's no way to know for sure, but there's definitely a deep bond between the two of them at the very least.
So now we know why Antonio is so upset when Cesario doesn't offer to help him out with the cops. And we can't really blame him, can we?
