Southeastern Louisiana University
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- My football team. They're actually pretty good. It was gone for several years and brought back in 2001.
- I'm the school that all the teachers and nurses go on about. These departments are huge and the competition for acceptance into Nursing School here gets fierce.
- My atmosphere. I have the perfect balance of buildings to nature. Not all of Louisiana is swampland.
- Kinesiology. There are a lot of people here focusing on careers tied to sports and coaching. I also have an amazing recreation center.
- The Humanities. I rock at the arts and the classical subjects. Great professors, great productions.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- Sunscreen. Slather it on for all of that walking under the Louisiana sun (taking the tram is for the weak).
- At least one Southeastern shirt. You won't have much choice; shirts are given away and sold everywhere.
- Your University ID. You'll need it to check out your textbooks. That's right; you can rent your textbooks here.
- Online ordering skills. There's only one bookstore on campus for materials and non-textbook books. The first two weeks of classes, the lines go on forever. English majors are often found sobbing in the back of the store.
- Tickets for Fanfare. This is my month-long celebration of the Humanities, featuring performances and lectures all October.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- You're friends with any teachers or nurses. Seriously, I've claimed all of them.
- You've driven through Tangipahoa Parish and asked someone, "What's going on here?" The answer will be, "Well, Southeastern is that way."
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
If I'm feeling artsy, I'll be huddled together with some creative types in a dorm watching Shatknado or hanging out at The Brown Door. We may even go check out the current art show at the Hammond Regional Arts Center.
If it's a sporty sort of day, I'll be at the stadium watching a football game. After the game, Brady's always welcomes the SLU crowd.
There's also a slight chance I may be asleep on a couch in the library. There are tons of great napping couches in there.
Favorite Hangouts:
- For food stuffs, Brady's or Mariner's Inn. For a really cheap meal, Tacos and Beer.
- The Brown Door or Cate Street Pub for some music or to shoot some pool.
- When I'm feeling cultured, I'll catch a show at the Columbia Theatre.
- Heading to New Orleans or Baton Rouge. There's a lot of places to hangout when two major cities are a stone's throw away.
Quirks:
- With the size of my student body, registration can get crazy. Get as many things done online as you possibly can to avoid a few lines. Fortunately our online LEONet system is pretty topnotch. When you do have to go to campus to pay money or pick up books, go as soon as that office opens. And if you're a commuter, just bite the bullet and register for 8:00AM classes. There are a lot of parking spots, but there are few good parking spots available.
- My honors program classes are pretty awesome. If you want to feel like an upperclassman as a freshman, go the honors route. Small classes, quirky teachers. You'll actually enjoy writing essays and doing research.
- The course list doesn't get cleaned up often enough. You may find classes that haven't been offered in a decade. Just trust in your adviser and all will be fine.
Famous Alumni:
- Robin Roberts, the anchor who gets tipsy with Kathie Lee Gifford on Good Morning America
- Bill Evans, jazz pianist and composer
- Nathaniel "Big Easy" Lofton, Harlem Globetrotter and chronic The Amazing Race contestant
- Roger Wang, super rich businessman
