Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey)’s Timeline and Summary

When we first meet Lester, he's pretty much a sad sack—his family doesn't really seem to like or respect him, his job is going nowhere, and he basically feels dead inside, according to his voiceover self.
When Lester meets Angela Hayes, his daughter's friend, that all changes. Seeing her seems to reawaken his desire for passion in his life.
Having been reawakened, Lester starts working out, standing up to the people around him, and smoking pot. Basically, he starts enjoying his life again.
He kind of/sort of pursues his flirtation with Angela, despite the fact that she is underaged (and his daughter is mortified), but eventually he comes to his senses, seeming to realize that the "Angela" who woke him up was a pure fantasy woman and the actual girl in front of him is just that—a girl.
Unfortunately, after a misunderstanding, his neighbor, Frank Fitts, ends up killing Lester. But not to worry—according to his voiceover self, he's just super happy and grateful for the life he had and all the beauty he ended up seeing and experiencing.
