Emelina Domingos, Hallie Noline, Loyd Peregrina

Codi has a lot of mentors in Animal Dreams, from the wise women of Stitch and B**** to her cockfighting, engine-driving, philosophizing boyfriend Loyd. Emelina gives Codi good advice; even Doc is occasionally frank with her when he can remember what year it is; and both Uda Dell and Viola Domingos give Codi important context in which to understand her father's poor parenting. Above all, though, Loyd is Codi's guide. He's patient with her self-involved complaints about Grace and how she feels rejected, and he always tells her the truth in response—even when the truth is that she's got a white savior complex, and that she runs away from everyone she loves.
