At the very beginning of Annie Hall, Alvy tells us that he and Annie broke up. Then he spends the next 93 minutes trying to figure out why. Through flashbacks, split screens, and non-linear storytelling, he scrutinizes their failed relationship and searches for the secrets of a successful one.
He probes their previous partners, studies their lobster-loaded highs and their argument-filled lows, and ultimately comes to the conclusion that enduring, modern love may be absurd, but we need it just the same.
