- A flashback reminds us of when Jack and Ennis were young, hot cowboys in love, and times were good. It was almost twenty years ago, but it only feels like an hour ago…Time flies when you're watching a movie.
- Back in the present, Ennis drives away.
- Cassie spots Ennis in a diner by himself. She's with another man.
- She approaches the table and asks Ennis where he's been.
- She's been leaving him lots of notes, but he's never responded.
- Ennis is his typical taciturn self, and Cassie leaves in tears.
- Later, Ennis checks the mail, and he stops dead in the street.
- His most recent postcard to Jack has been returned to sender, stamped DECEASED.
- Ennis phones Jack's widow, Lureen.
- Lureen tells Ennis that Jack was changing a tire, and it exploded.
- The rim hit him in the face, and he drowned in his own blood. This is why you always call AAA, kids.
- Ennis imagines a different fate for Jack—him being beaten to death with a tire iron by four men. It's Ennis's greatest fear come to life. Or death.
- Lureen says Jack wanted his ashes scattered on Brokeback Mountain, but she didn't know where that was.
- Ennis tells her it was where he and Jack met and herded sheep.
- Lureen realizes the true nature of Jack's relationship with Ennis,
- She feels bad, but she still tells Ennis to contact Jack's folks to carry out his wishes regarding the ashes.
