- The band pulls up at Grand Calloway Station and Miss Thomas takes Bud to the room he will sleep in.
- Imagining scary monsters bursting out of the cupboards in the room, Bud asks if the closet doors are locked and finds out that the closet is full of girly stuff.
- The girl is gone, which Bud thinks means she's dead, whoever she is.
- After Miss Thomas says goodnight, he hears her argue with Calloway outside of his door.
- Out of nowhere, Calloway busts into the room, locks all the closet doors and threatens Bud, saying he had better not touch anything or snoop because he'll find out and send Bud away.
- Once Calloway leaves, Bud remembers swimming at the YMCA and how a man there would lie to the kids to get them to stop peeing in the pool, threatening them and scaring them. Bud thinks that there is no way to make kids want to do the wrong thing more than telling them not to do it and threatening them as if they were stupid.
- Looking around the room, Bud likes the pictures of horses hanging on the wall.
- Bud falls asleep thinking of a bedtime story.
