Cloud 9 Act 2, Scene 3 Summary

  • We're still hanging at the park. It's a nice summer night, and Victoria, Lin, and Edward stumble into view. They're all drunk.
  • Next they start discussing how they're supposed to sit for whatever it is they plan on doing. From the sounds of things, it's going to be some weird séance or ritual to "call up the goddess."
  • It seems like we've heard something like this before in this play. And if you remember waaaaayyy back in Act 1, you might recall how Joshua told Edward a "bad story" about how an earth goddess created all life on this planet.
  • We also realize pretty quickly that this ceremony (or whatever it is) is going to involve some orgy sex.
  • While Edward and Lin chant, Victoria starts talking to some goddess who apparently walked the earth before Christ or Jehovah or any of the gods we're more likely to know about. She's suggesting that there was some female-centered religion kicking around before Christianity and the other modern religions came and made everything man-centered.
  • Lin jokes around and tries to scare Victoria and Edward. Everyone just wants to get to the orgy part. But just when they're about to get going, Edward realizes that there's someone else nearby in the park.
  • Victoria invites the stranger to join in on the orgy. It turns out that the dude passing by is Martin. Martin wants to know what the heck is going on, and why everyone is so drunk.
  • But the rest of them just jump on Martin and pull him into their orgy. Martin's totally cool with what's going on; but then another person shows up. Lin invites this new person to join in the orgy too.
  • But it turns out that this new visitor is the ghost of Lin's dead brother. Lin asks if her brother has come back to tell them all something important, but he says he's just come back for some freaky ghost sex. He hated how he was never allowed to have sex when he was in the army.
  • After the ghost leaves, the orgy falls apart and Lin tells Martin that Victoria is going to come live with her and Edward. Martin tells her that they can talk about it in the morning.
  • Everyone leaves and the stage is empty for a second. Then Gerry shows up and talks directly to us about how he likes coming to the park to find someone to have sex with.
  • Edward comes onstage. But it's not the modern Edward; it's the young Edward from act one (the one played by a girl). This Edward tells Gerry he loves him. And Gerry says he loves Edward, too.
  • Edward talks to Gerry about "doing it again" like they did before, and his request is eerily similar to the one Edward made to Harry Bagley back in Act 1.
  • The scene ends with a song about being on Cloud 9. Title alert!
  • For those of you who don't know, the expression "being on cloud 9" means that you're in a wonderful state of enjoyment.
  • The rest of the song lays out some situations involving unconventional love that might seem strange to us but are still beautiful to the people who experience it.
