Okay, so we'll admit that someone nicknamed for the guy who wrote The Prince is perhaps not a guide/mentor who has our protagonists' best interests at heart—he's far more concerned about what Julie and Maddie can do for him and for the war effort than about whether or not they come out of it alive. That said, he sees potential in both Julie and Maddie, trains them well for the work they have to do, and always gives them an out. Plus, despite Maddie's anger at him, he seems to genuinely mourn Julie's death.
