Code Talkers Timeline and Summary

Platoon 382, the platoon that the Navajo code talkers are a part of, goes through "boot camp" after they're recruited as Marines.
The platoon is charged with developing a secret code based on the Navajo language, which will be used by the Marines in the fight against the Japanese in the Pacific.
After coming up with the code, the Navajo Marines are sent to different islands in the Pacific to take part in the battle against the Japanese.
On the island of Bougainville, the first code talker, Harry Tsosie, is killed by friendly fire when he steps out of his foxhole to pee.
In 1968, the military declassifies the Navajo code, which has been kept secret even after the end of the war.
In 1971, President Richard Nixon honors the Marines with a certificate recognizing their service during World War II.
In 2001, the original twenty-nine code talkers are awarded Congressional Gold Medals in recognition of their service, and silver medals go to the code talkers who followed after them.
