Character Role Analysis

Inman, Ada

Inman fills the standard protagonist role quite nicely. He's the center of the action as he struggles to get home from the war, he's the center of the conflict as the Home Guard tries to get him, and he's the character the audience roots for and sympathizes with.

Ada also has a protagonist-type role. It's subtler, since she basically stays in one place and doesn't have so many fight scenes, but she's learning how to survive and how to carve out a place for herself. Her plucky willingness to learn a new life makes us root for her as she struggles to learn.
