Character Role Analysis
Vortigern and the Saxons
Vortigern makes a nasty start to his reign. He murders Constantius, his ward (and brother to Ambrosius and Uther), to steal the throne of Britain. When he can't unite the lesser British kings, he calls in outsiders—the Saxons—to help him out.
The Saxons sack and pillage—and Vortigern looks the other way. He even has a Saxon queen who murders and mutilates people. Um, nice.
Vortigern's also a superstitious dude, so he allows himself to be manipulated by his soothsayers. The final straw? He wants to slaughter Merlin to use his blood as a talisman for his new tower. But seriously, though. How could he be much worse?
