Dandelion Wine Chapter 29 Summary

  • And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for: Things start getting spooky.
  • Doug, Tom, and Charlie are on their way to Summer's Ice House to cool off. (Ever wonder why old people say "icebox" instead of "refrigerator?" It's because you used to get big blocks of ice at an ice house, put them in a big insulated box, and keep your food cold that way. )
  • Doug, being his emo self, asks Tom whatever happened to happy endings. Tom says going to bed every night is a happy ending for him, so every day ends happily.
  • Doug keeps being emo. Bill Forrester has told him the Helen Loomis story, and he's been crying his head off about it.
  • Tom, prophesying the wisdom of a million chick flicks, suggests Doug cry for ten minutes, eat a pint of chocolate ice cream, and get a good night's rest.
  • Inside the ice house, they eat icicles, and Tom mentions the story of the Snow Queen. He says he doesn't believe in the Snow Queen anymore.
  • Charlie says, "You know who lives here? The Lonely One!" He thinks this because he's noticed that when creepy things happen, they feel cold even on the hottest nights.
  • Tom screams, and Charlie tells Doug not to worry: He just dropped a little ice down Tom's back as he finished telling the story.
