Character Role Analysis
Rachel
Is it cheating to say Rachel is her own mentor? Maybe, but then again, she doesn't exactly have a Yoda or Merlin character busting into the school to teach her important life lessons, now does she?
Lacking a true mentor character, Rachel tries to be her own mentor, and if you ask us, she does pretty well all things considered. For example, Rachel notes:
And when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven, but you don't. You open your eyes and everything's just like yesterday, only it's today (1).
She's basically saying that who you are is the sum of your experiences, and since she hasn't experienced eleven, she can't rightly say she is eleven yet.
That's a mature and fascinating life lesson, but since Rachel is so young, she doesn't have the words to describe it or the ability to see that she's actually teaching herself as she goes. Which is a shame because she's pretty dynamite at this character role.
