Nikki, honey, we hate to say it, but you've gotten yourself into a huge mess: As a Forfeit to the Everneath, you're obligated to return there after six months on the Surface. All this is why we consider Nikki the protagonist of Everneath. She's far from perfect, but that makes it easy for us to empathize with her; we totally want to see her succeed. Combine this with the fact that hers is the journey we're on in this book, and Nikki's definitely our protagonist.
