Pop Culture-Heavy, with a Touch of Snark
If you and your friends like to give each other a hard time and occasionally use slang—which we're thinking is probably the case if you don't live in a cave—then Rainbow Rowell writes like she's inside your head. She's exceptionally good at capturing the way young people really talk, and she doesn't shy away from cursing.
For example, when Reagan finally drags Cath to the dining hall and sits near the door so she can snark on people, they see a girl with a tail. Reagan thinks the tail is horrific; Cath thinks it's kind of cute. Here's how Rowell writes part of that conversation:
If God put me into your life to keep you from wearing a f***ing tail," Reagan said, "I accept the assignment. (5.29)
If that's not snark for you, then we don't know what is, Shmoopers.
There's also plenty of pop culture, as you might expect from a book about college students and online fan communities. Cath throws an Emergency Kanye Party; Mr. Avery makes reference to Magneto and Professor X; Cath and Wren have a Sanrio mobile in their room. Lady Gaga, American Apparel, Iron Chef, and Mad Men all come up in conversation, while Ugg boots make multiple appearances (though they're met with snark). In other words, if you've spent any time at all on the Internet or watching television, Fangirl speaks your language.
