- Frannie walks with Samantha along a little stream down the road toward their homes. As they walk, Samantha wonders if the Jesus Boy really is Jesus… like he's really God's son.
- Even though Frannie scoffs at the idea, Samantha insists that maybe he's here to help, since there's a war going on. She says that people are starving, and that bad things are always happening—maybe that's why the Jesus Boy is here.
- Samantha's dad is a preacher at a fire-and-brimstone kind of church, so she's pretty into religion. Frannie, on the other hand, always makes excuses in order to miss church. It just isn't her thing.
- Then Samantha brings up the shortest verse in the Bible, which reads, "Jesus wept." Since the Jesus Boy cried in class, she finds this profound and strange. Frannie, however, thinks that it's ridiculous.
- Frannie argues that Jesus isn't even white in the Bible, but Samantha is undeterred—she thinks that Jesus just appears as whatever he needs to be, and maybe this time he needs to be a skinny white boy in the sixth grade.
- After this conversation, Samantha walks to her house and Frannie goes along to the apartment building where her family lives.
