The First Part Last is sort of about sex, but it's not really about sex at all—it's really about fatherhood, coming-of-age, and love. So while there are references to sex in the novel, all of the hanky-panky occurs off page. There is talk of contraception and protection when Bobby tells his friends that Nia's pregnant, but it kind of takes a backseat to the real issue, which is that Nia is already pregnant and what is Bobby going to do. So sex may be the source of a lot of the conflict in the novel, but it's not what the novel is really about.
