- Before second grade starts, Bryce moves into a new house with his family. This new place is across the street from Juli Baker's house. Right away Bryce decides that Juli is a girl with cooties who needs to be avoided.
- In second, third, and fourth grade, Bryce spends most of his time avoiding Juli.
- By fifth grade, Bryce tries hanging out with Juli's arch-enemy, Shelly Stalls, to push Juli away. He also tries to climb the sycamore tree after Juli saves his kite.
- When sixth grade rolls around, Bryce gets answers for the spelling test by cheating off of Juli's answers. Juli also starts giving Bryce eggs that her science fair hens have hatched, but he secretly throws them away.
- In seventh grade, Bryce's grandpa moves in with his family.
- Then in eighth grade, the drama in Bryce's life reaches an all-time high, beginning with his decision not to help Juli when they cut down the sycamore tree in her front yard.
- Soon after, Juli catches Bryce throwing out the eggs she gives him; eventually Bryce apologizes.
- Bryce learns that Juli's uncle is mentally and physically disabled, and then he realizes how shallow his dad is when he has a nasty reaction to this. The same goes for his buddy Garrett.
- The next day, at the Loski-Baker joint family dinner, Bryce gets super embarrassed by his dad.
- When the Basket Boys event comes around, Bryce gets auctioned off to Shelly and Miranda, two airheaded gals; he gets jealous that Juli bids on a guy named Jon.
- Bryce confronts Juli and tries to kiss her, but no dice.
- After Juli backs away from the kiss, Bryce decides to prove to her that he's a changed guy. Eventually he plants a sycamore tree in her yard. And now he has to wait and see what happens next.
