Character Analysis
Here's the thing about Garrett: he starts off the book as Bryce's close bud, but by the end of Flipped these two aren't even on speaking terms anymore.
When Garrett and Bryce are chums, Garrett seems like a pretty cool dude—in fact, he's pretty supportive of Bryce. When Bryce needs a friend to hang out with, he calls Garrett. Or when Bryce needs to spy on Juli's backyard to see if any of her chickens are roosters, Garrett happily tags along. We don't get to hear a ton about Garrett, but for a lot of this book he plays the part of Bryce's loyal friend.
But when Bryce confides in Garrett that Juli has a disabled uncle, we see a whole new side to Garrett. He makes really cruel comments that let us know he's not such a nice guy. And then when Bryce tries to kiss Juli, Garrett throws the supportive friend role right out the window. He tells Bryce:
Now look at you. You're, like, a social hazard. […] And, dude, the truth is, if you're gonna be like this, I don't need the association. (13.152)
Garrett sure has gone from a good bud to a mean guy, right? Instead of supporting his friend, he ends the friendship entirely. We guess he was a fair-weather friend all along.
