Protagonist
Character Role Analysis
Isaac McCaslin
Taken as a whole, the novel is Isaac's story. He appears from childhood through old age in various chapters. His actions and memories unite the various time frames and drive the narrative forward. It's his vision that Faulkner promotes: the idea of a country where the land will be preserved and people respected for who they are instead of because of race or inheritance. Not all the characters share this vision, but they react to it in some way.
