Character Role Analysis
Trick Question
Isaac gets married and stays married until he's widowed, but we hear next to nothing about his wife after she realizes that he'll never make her rich. He seems to prefer the company of men, and has his mind on loftier matters than love and sex. In fact, a reader might be shocked to find out that he even got married. He seems too much into self-denial. Anyway, now than we think of it, the only examples of loving, enduring marriages in the novel are the African American characters. What's that about, Faulkner?
