Character Role Analysis

Sammy Leeds

While he's not a total villain, Sammy Leeds, who occasionally fits the role of town bully, is the Big Bad Wolf in two of Tom's schemes. Apparently, if you can whip Sammy Leeds in a fight, you have succeeded in the eyes of Adenville's boys. The ultimate test of Tom's training and ultimate victory for both Basil and Andy comes when he beats Sammy Leeds in a fight.

Mr. Standish

It's a classic David and Goliath pairing: The young student against the cruel new teacher. At least, it would be, if David had a great brain instead of a slingshot and if giants were secret drinkers. After Mr. Standish whips him, Tom decides to get even, and for all intents and purposes, he wins the battle, taking down the mighty teacher. Only Tom's ultimate decision to admit his role in planting whiskey bottles saves Mr. Standish's career.
