Tom doesn't need a guide or a mentor to hatch his schemes—he's great at doing that himself. However, sometimes he needs a question answered, like how strong does the other limb become if you lose one? Since there's no Google in 1896, his newspaper editor Papa is a good source of information. He's also a good source of reining Tom in when Tom takes it too far, like when he nearly costs Mr. Standish his career.
