Character Role Analysis
J.D.
J.D. is the Le Fou to Tom's Gaston, if Gaston were brainy instead of brawny. As the younger brother, J.D. is virtually programmed to admire, support, and shake his head at Tom—just like the reader. While eldest brother Sweyn is often absent, J.D. is right there, constantly getting drawn into Tom's schemes, his admiration for and dependence upon his older brother used and abused in service to Tom's great brain.
