Character Role Analysis

Professor Dumbledore

He's got the beard, the glasses, and that ineffable air of wisdom.

From the start of the film, Dumbledore seems to hold all the cards, which means it's a good thing he's on Harry's side. It also makes him the ideal mentor for Harry: he shows Harry the ropes, guides him on his journey, and generally makes sure that when trouble rears its ugly head, Harry's ready to take it on.

Of course, he's a little cryptic about the kind of advice he gives, and usually leaves Harry to figure things out on his own. But he's always watching and, at points when Harry might be in over his head—such as the situation with the Mirror of Erised—he steps in.

It should also be noted that McGonagall, Hagrid and even Snape also serve as guides and mentors at points. They're much more practical than Dumbledore, and their advice, while less important, is often more immediately useful.

But they're all just riffing on a theme; Dumbledore is playing the real music.
