Exactly how steamy is this story?
PG
So, "Here We Are" is all about sex—but it's not some sort of near-pornographic Fifty Shades of Grey¬-style short story. In fact there are no overt references to sex at all.
Really, the sexual content in here is limited to people saying "I mean—" instead of saying something about sex. The story never totally opens up about the sex thing, at any point, although it becomes totally obvious that the whole thing is about boinking.
A good example would be a few of the wife's lines:
"I know," she said. "But I just sort of got to thinking of them, all of them, all over everywhere, doing it all the time. At least, I mean—getting married, you know. And it's well, it's sort of such a big thing to do, it makes you feel queer. You think of them, all of them, all doing it just like it wasn't anything. And how does anybody know what's going to happen next?" (23)
Yes, that awkward ramble is all about boinking. And so is the rest of the story. But the whole thing is done in such a tender, nervous, roundabout way that it's impossible to give it more that a PG rating.
