Sam

As our main character, Sam's got a lot on his plate. Protecting his friends and family while trying to discover the truth about his past and working to defeat Douglas is a pretty tall order, and on top of that, one of his best friends is now a head. With a conflict like that, you can't help but root for this guy and want to see him triumph, and sure enough, he does.

Whacking Douglas isn't the only thing that makes Sam our protagonist, though. He also goes on a serious personal journey from being just your average, every day college dropout to the most powerful necromancer in the northwestern United States. In the process, he makes the decision to "accept what I was. What I am" (31.110). Sounds like a classic hero to us.
