McBride has some serious credibility when it comes to writing. She holds an MFA in fiction writing from the University of New Orleans, and Hold Me Closer, Necromancer, her first novel, was a finalist for the Young Adult Library Services Association Award for excellence in writing for young audiences.

McBride was a reading prodigy of sorts. She learned to read at age three and spent most of her time in the library. Today, that same library can hardly keep Hold Me Closer, Necromancer on the shelves.

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer began as a short story McBride wrote in college. Other characters in the book, such as Ashley and Ed, also come from stories crafted during her time at New Orleans' MFA program.
