What's Up With the Ending?
Honey, they un-shrunk the kids.
After Big Russ nobly volunteers to be the test subject for the newly-repaired shrink ray, Wayne reactivates his invention and brings the kids back to their original size. Cue warm family reunions and copious hugs.
More than that, however, we see both families come to terms with their respective issues: Wayne finally acknowledges that he hasn't been paying enough attention to his kids, while Big Russ acknowledges that he's been putting too much pressure on Little Russ and outright ignoring Ron.
What's more, these two fathers make peace with one another, finally ending the eternal conflict between jocks and nerds. That's like the Jedi and Sith becoming buddy-buddy.
The film closes with both families enjoying a dinner together, which represents both the peace reached within each family and between them. That's sweet. We also see Amy and Little Russ playing footsie under the table, which is simultaneously adorable and nauseating. Oh well.
The biggest takeaway, however, is that both families have realized that there's nothing more important than their relationships with one another, and that they won't take them for granted ever again.
Or at least until the next film in the series. Hey—you can't win them all.
