Comedy; Science Fiction

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a comedy in every sense of the word. On one hand, it's a comedy because it's full of jokes and laughs and light-hearted hijinks. On the other, it also fits the classic definition of comedy because it follows characters that are in a disconnected situation at the onset, go through trials and tribulations, and end up in a place of happiness and togetherness. (And giant turkey meals.)

Of course, the use of an invention as far out as a shrink ray lands the film firmly in the camp of science fiction. It's certainly not hard science fiction, which places a strong emphasis on realistic technology and plausible scientific ideas, but it uses many tropes of the genre to great effect. Then again, maybe the real secret to creating a new invention is a conveniently placed baseball. We've heard stranger things.
