Production Design
Abnormal Normality
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is one of the quirkiest films that ever quirked.
Even before the kids get shrunk (spoiler alert), the Szalinski household is anything but usual. The production designers of the film do a spectacular job depicting Wayne's brand of scientific insanity by creating a host of DIY-looking inventions littered throughout the house. This helps the film remain grounded in reality while still feeling slightly surreal.
That surreal nature is amplified once we view the Szalinski home from a much tinier perspective. The cool part about this is that everything we're seeing is decidedly ordinary—blades of grass, snack cakes, Legos, or a bowl of Cheerios—but they become funhouse versions of themselves when viewed from this angle.
This isn't just a great way of immersing the audience in the kids' experience, but also of forcing them to take a different perspective on the world they take for granted every day.
