The Walt Disney Company
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was produced by a small-time boutique imprint known as…the Walt Disney Company. We're guessing you may have heard of them…unless you've been shrunken to the size where "hiding under a rock" is both a well-worn turn of phrase and a possible reality.
Disney is one of the most storied production companies of all-time. Beginning in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, its first full-length picture (and the first full-length animated film ever) the company would go on to produce countless classic films throughout its long history. Although many of these films would be animated features, the company increasingly dove into live action productions over the years.
To be honest, Disney didn't think that Honey, I Shrunk the Kids would be a big success and invested a relatively modest $18 million into the film. And the box-office take? A whopping $222 million worldwide, making it the then-highest grossing live action film in the company's repertoire. That's an underdog story if we've ever heard one.
Disney would later try to exploit this success with the release of one theatrical sequel, one straight-to-video sequel (the first they had ever produced), and one particularly ill-advised television series, but none of them would reach the heights of the biggest surprise hit of 1989.
