• Roy is getting bullied on the bus when he see the strange running boy from out of the window.
• Going against a warning from Beatrice, Roy continues to try and figure out the mystery of the running boy.
• Eventually, he meets the boy and learns his name is Mullet Fingers.
• Roy and Beatrice start to form a friendship and she eventually turns to him for help when Mullet Fingers gets bitten by a dog.
• And Roy finally learns about the burrowing owls at the Mother Paula's construction site and how Mullet Fingers is trying to help them.
• Beatrice and Roy take Mullet Fingers to the hospital because his condition is worsening.
• When Roy's parents find out about the hospital visit, Roy confesses (mostly) everything about Mullet Fingers and the owls on the construction site.
• Roy tells Beatrice that they need to team up with Mullet Fingers in order to help the owls.
• He decides to go to city hall to see if Mother Paula's has all the required paperwork to build their pancake house on the owls' land. But their file has been checked out.
• At school, Roy tells his classmates about the owls living on the construction site and encourages them to attend the groundbreaking ceremony and protest with him.
• Roy lends Mullet Fingers his mother's digital camera to take pictures of the owls (proving that they live on the construction site).
• At the groundbreaking ceremony, Roy speaks up and tries to show the crowd the pictures but they are all blurry.
• Together with Beatrice and Mullet Fingers, Roy turns the groundbreaking ceremony into a peaceful demonstration against construction on the land.
• The next day, a reporter comes to Roy's house to interview him and Roy's father instructs him to give the reporter a copy of Mother Paula's file from city hall…which is missing the Environmental Impact Statement.
• Roy and the gang are famous for quite a bit after the story breaks.
