How I Live Now is pretty much defined by its lack of guides and mentors. Aunt Penn's around for a couple pages at the beginning before she peaces out for the rest of the book (R.I.P.), but Daisy and the cousins are basically left to fend for themselves. In this book, it really matters that these kids suddenly find themselves all by their lonesome with war literally banging on their door.
