Alone
- Meggie and Elinor talk about Mo's disappearance. Elinor has called the police using Mo's cell phone (since the landline was cut); the police ask some questions, then leave.
- The house feels big and lonely to Elinor. She'd lived there with her family while growing up, including a father who gave more attention to his books than to his children.
- Elinor takes Meggie to her room to sleep, which according to Elinor was the room where her mother always slept. Elinor returns to her room, and feels guilty when she thinks about the book she has waiting for her there.
