Character Analysis
Hugh is the dude who Lucy meets at a party that Mariah and Lewis throw at their lake house. Despite being the brother of Dinah (whom Lucy totally despises), he is pretty much Lucy's dream guy.
Specifically, Hugh melts Lucy's heart by asking her where exactly in the West Indies she's from, showing just how different he is from all the other clueless North Americans Lucy encounters who assume that all Caribbean islands are the same.
Lucy handsomely rewards Hugh's sensitivity by having sex with him the very same night they meet. The two go on to have a summer fling.
Lucy's relationship with Hugh introduces us to her fairly casual attitude toward sex. She explains:
If I enjoyed myself beyond anything I had known so far, it must have been because such a long time had passed since I had been touched in that way by anyone; it must have been because I was so far from home. I was not in love. (3.21)
So, contrary to what Cosmopolitan might say, love is not a requirement for great sex (in Lucy's world at least).
