Character Analysis
So Lewis is nothing more than Mariah's no-good, cheating, rabbit-killing (!) husband, right? Well, not so fast.
It's true that Lewis probably wouldn't win any Husband of the Year awards given that he's having an affair with his wife's best friend and all—and Lewis's hatred of poor little bunnies doesn't do much to endear us to him.
But we've got to give the devil his due. Lucy helps us with that task by pointing out some of Lewis's more positive traits. For one thing, he's thoughtful. She tells us:
If I said something he thought interesting, he would ask me all sorts of questions and then later bring me books, books that I did not even know existed. (3.5)
And even though the guy is having an affair with the hot-to-trot Dinah, Lewis isn't some egomaniac who thinks he's all that, as Lucy remarks:
What was nice about Lewis was that he did not draw your attention to how handsome he was; he didn't draw attention to anything about him. (3.5)
So it seems even lying, cheating husbands can have some redeeming qualities.
Besides showing that Lewis is more complex than your average slime ball, Lucy's evaluation also tells us a little something about her. While Lucy can certainly be critical, her willingness to recognize Lewis's finer points shows that she can also be fair when it comes to judging others.
