Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
Ed McCarthy
Frank may be great with his hands (and with the I Ching), but it's Ed who has the plan for Edfrank Jewelry and for the jewelry itself. In another book, mastermind Ed would be a protagonist. But here, we get more of Frink's story, even if he's mostly just good with his hands. Maybe that's a lesson: don't look down on people who are good with their hands.
Hawthorne Abendsen
Hawthorne doesn't see himself as a guide, but his book does guide Juliana toward the truth about the world. (But maybe we should call the I Ching the real guide here. Can an inanimate book be a mentor? Check out "Symbols" for more on that.)
