- It's the first day of hiking. Cassia and her fellow hikers are told to hike up a hill in the Arboretum and meet their Officer/instructor at the top.
- Cassia gets a head start and sneaks off under the canopy of leaves to safely read the paper hidden in the golden compact. It's a poem that begins with "Do not go gentle into that good night."
- Cassia quickly realizes the reason the Society had to get rid of the poem—it encourages people to fight. She also realizes her great-grandmother must have squirrelled it away.
- When she gets to the top, the only other person there is Ky. Turns out he saw her.
- He offers to help her get rid of the paper.
