Missing May Theme of Dreams, Hopes and Plans

The characters in Missing May are people of modest means—after all, they come from a small town and don't have big shiny things like mansions and iPods to show off. But that doesn't mean that they don't have big and important dreams for themselves. For Uncle Ob, his dream is to somehow communicate with Aunt May again so that he doesn't feel so alone. Summer just wants things to start working at home again so that she and Ob can make their own little family unit happy. And Cletus wants to see more of the world—he's tired of just being limited to their small town. Together, these three go on a quest to make all their dreams come true.

  2.  If a genie could grant you one wish, what would it be?
  3. Why do you think Cletus wants to go to the capitol so much? Why is it so important to him?
  4. What is the significance of Uncle Ob bringing his whirligigs outside?

Try on an opinion or two, start a debate, or play the devil’s advocate.

Aunt May's dreams all had to do with making sure that her people were happy and well cared for—so when she died, she left with no regrets and no unfinished dreams.

By going on a quest to fulfill Cletus's dream of seeing the capitol for the first time, Uncle Ob actually manages to fulfill his dream of feeling closer to Aunt May even in death.
