- Asher is born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in 1943.
- As a child, Asher begins to show a talent for drawing. His mom encourages it but wishes he'd draw "prettier" things. His dad dislikes it.
- Asher's Uncle Yaakov dies, and Asher temporarily stops drawing.
- Asher enters yeshiva and starts drawing again—this time pictures of dead Josef Stalin (which would be a great band name).
- Asher's parents inform him that the entire family will be moving to Vienna, and Asher refuses to go.
- Asher's dad goes to Vienna alone—Asher feels guilty about splitting his parents up, but not for long.
- Asher gets in trouble in school for not paying attention to his lessons and drawing in his Chumash.
- The Rabbi realizes that Asher's got a really impressive talent and asks the artist Jacob Kahn to mentor him.
- Asher and Jacob Kahn get really close and sometimes spend the summers together at Jacob Kahn's place in Cape Cod. Asher learns a lot about painting and sculpture.
